Traditionally, orangeries were built to protect citrus trees, brought from faraway countries, from winter. The word orangery originates from the French oranger: orange tree. Because of the cold winters in Northern Europe it wasn’t possible for (sub)tropical citrus plants and trees to survive outside in the frost. An orangerie, with its characteristic glass construction and warm and bright athmosfere, offered a good solution.
